The games started as part of the celebrations of the coronation of King George the Fifth in 1911. An inter-Empire sports contest was held on the Crystal Palace Grounds to which Canada, Australia and South Africa were invited to send teams. It was not until countries of the Empire attending the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 decided that the Empire Games should be held. It was through the initiative of a Canadian, M.M. Robinson that the Empire Games be held. In 1930 the British Empire Games finally took shape in Hamilton, Ontario and Commonwealth countires from around the world participated.
The name changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954 and British Commonwealth Games in 1970. The current name, Commonwealth Games was assumed in 1990. Presently, about 72 nations compete in about 20 events.
