Arthur Thomas Bushby arrived in Esquimalt Harbour on Christmas Day, 1858 aboard the steamer Panama. One of the first British settlers to the area he arrived "on spec" and decided to make British Columbia his home.

Bushby became actively involved in Victoria musical life which for its time was very active, considering the early history of settlement on the Pacific Coast. He was both active as a singer and instrumentalist and was a founding member of the Victoria Philharmonic Society. The Society performed many a fine concert.

In 1861, Bushby became Registrar-General for the mainland colony. Soonafter, he married Governor Douglas's daughter and settled in New Westminster. There he quickly became active musically and continued to accompany performers from Victoria, despite the bitter political quarrels between New Westminster and Victoria at that time.
