Allen Shakespeare Wootton was born in Brackley, Northants, England in 1873. He received his academic training at Magdalen College School where he graduated with a degree in engineering. After serving as an engineer in England, he came to Vancouver in 1910. He became superintendent of water-works in New Westminster and soonafter he joined the Parks Board staff as engineer.

During his 30 years with the Parks Board, Wootton was an ambititious man with many plans for Vancouver's park lands. He helped plan 70 parks in the city and was responsible for the building of Kitsilano Pool and many other city pools. The curving approach to Lions Gate Bridge was one of his ideas. He also designed Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park.

Outside of playing a little golf, when "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling" hit him, Wootton was liable to produce an Ode. Crimson Sunset is his ode to Stanley Park.
