For over 50 years, George Jennings Burnett was one of Victoria's leading musicians. He was a prominent organist, choral conductor, composer, teacher and organizer of both sacred and secular concerts.

Born in Somerset England, Jennings Burnett came to Canada with his parents. His father was a pioneer druggist of New Westminster and an amateur musician who also made a notable contribution to hymnology.

Soon after his arrival in Victoria, he became organist at the old Calvary Baptist Church and soon moved to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church as organist and choirmaster. For thirty-six years he was organist at St. John's Church. Jennings Burnett gave many notable organ recitals. He also received renown as the composer, his organ compositions having frequently met with success in competition with composers from all over the world. He was also a wonderful teacher of theory and harmony.

Prominent Vancouver woman, social service worker, poet and writer Blanche E. Holt Murison wrote the lyrics to Jubilate. She published many of her poems in Vancouver newspapers and composed poetry in support of the European Allies during WWII. She was also concerned with the environmental effects of pesticides.
