Born in Singapore to British parents in 1891, Harold Mathews later moved to England where he studied music. In the early thirties, he taught music in Smithers, B.C. After serving in the army in WWI, he briefly settled in Vancouver. He moved to Powell River in 1935.

In some senses, Mathews was a pioneer teacher on the west coast. In Powell River, B.C. where he lived most of his life, he was organist and choir master at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and taught piano, violin, guitar, banjo, mandolin and xylophone. He also had the gift to extemporize very well.

Mowat Bay Hop was written for and performed by his students.
