Imant Raminsh was born in Ventspils, Latvia and moved to Canada in 1948. He completed his ARCT diploma in violin at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music. After completing his B. Mus. at the University of Toronto, he spent two years studying violin, conducting, composition and fugue at the Mozarteum Akademie.
In 1968, he was the founding conductor of the Caledonia Chamber Orchestra (now the Prince George Symphony) and the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Okanagan. He was also choral director of the Okanagan Symphony Choir and principal second violinist of the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra.
Primarily known for his choral and vocal works which reflects his Latvian song-oriented heritage, he is also composer of numerous orchestral and chamber pieces. His works have been performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir, the Elmer Iseler Singers among others and commissioned by choirs across Canada. Outside of his interest in music, he has also studied biology and geology and worked as a naturalist in provincial parks throughout British Columbia. He currently lives in Coldstream, BC.
