Myrtle Evertt wrote this song during the year of B.C.'s Centennial of becoming a colony. New Westminster held a May-Day celebration and she decided to get caught up in the excitement of the festivities. They rented a flat bed trailer and decorated it with a large picture of the mountains. This inspired Myrtle to write Out West of the Rockies. At that time, Myrtle and her husband owned and operated a 13-bed facility for the elderly. Two residents of the home dressed in period costume and sat in rocking chairs aboard the float.
The song sung by Myrtle and husband was played over a loud speaker which caused quite a stir.
