Born in New Westminster, B.C., Mary J. Garland was the second eldest of eleven children. She was a pianist, vocalist and active church convener. Having lived in Kelowna for about ten years, she often visited Lake Kalamalka located one mile south of Vernon. Mary admired its beauty and native heritage. For travellers of Highway 97, California to Alaska, the lake is the number one beauty spot. It is often referred to as the world's most beautiful lake.

Mary attemted to musically adapt the historical and mysterious lyrics by Ed Boyd. Kelowna choir director Phyllis Hill suggested Mary write the music (circa 1957-1960). Ricky Hyslop of the CBC orchestrated the music and it was recorded at CKOV Kelowna and broadcast nationally by the CBC. Suzanne handled the vocal.
