Golden Stanley, known as "Goldy" to his friends, was born in Vancouver in 1910. He moved to Powell River in the mid-1930s and found work as a logger and then as a research technician until the mid-1960s. He was Powell River's first archivist in 1962 and remained in that position until his death.

Stanley was a man of many talents. He became knowledgeable in botany, biology, music, photography, geology, geography, book-binding, and writing. He also had a keen interest in local history and was involved in scouting. He died in Powell River in 1986.
